If You Need A Facebook Prank To Promote Your Cause, Maybe You Need A Better Cause

Yes.

So… a “2015 Breast Cancer Awareness game” is going on in Facebook and other places in which a user posts a bizarre status such as “how do you get rid of foot fungus” or “I’ve decided to stop wearing underwear.” Should you like it or comment on it, you’ll get challenged to make such a post yourself. I’ve been reminded that many who have breast cancer, or who know someone who has it, don’t find these posts very funny.

My uncle has colon cancer that has migrated to his lymph nodes. Also not funny. This despite the fact he has a great sense of humor. Go figure.

I think instead I’ll just say this:

Dear Friends from 5874 BCE (B.C.) and Infants,

There is a thing called cancer, in essence a disease in which cells abnormally grow out of control and frequently spread to and invade other parts of the body. It frequently kills people if not caught in time, and then it sometimes kills them anyway. There are many varieties, the most common of which include breast cancer, skin cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer. If you’re so inclined, I invite you to contribute to the efforts to eradicate all cancers, and / or to organizations who care for those suffering from these awful diseases, focusing on where you have a personal stake.

Better yet, dive in and offer comfort and help to those whose lives have been affected.

Please also take care of yourself. Understand your personal risks and family medical history. Learn how to examine yourself for early warning signs of various cancers. Get that colonoscopy, prostate exam or other uncomfortable procedure done. We all love you, you know!

There. Wasn’t that better than a prank?
